* On and off I think of future Operating System ideas. In the distant future, our computing will be highly portable, somehow right in front of our eyes, overlaying a GPS/Internet right over what we look at. Labling our vision with information and ideas. For the near future, we are limited to current tech. So with current tech in mind, what should the next big operating system look like? Linux and Windows both use icons and a start menu. Apple uses a heap of start menu's, and also some kind of icon bar. Cell phones use a basic list, sometimes with animated icons. But what is NEXT for our lovely computer screens? I say we take a look at the videogame "Little Big Planet". That game makes it fun to create game levels out of yarn and cardboard. So thats it! Arts&Crafts is the theme of my next big operating system idea. Let's have one big cork board take up the whole screen, with little burlap bags full of your multimedia. You know how Google's Gmail uses "labels/filters"? Lets use that idea of Tags for our burlap bags. You can archive a bunch of files just by dumping them into one huge bag. WindowsXP made it easy enough to sort files by lists, so we can stick with that for now, except also adding intelligent/fast search options. Your cork screen will have a bunch of these little burlap bags, you can zoom in and out of, by using a magnifying glass. There are other art supplies, too. Siscors, ruler, drawing supplies, stencils, etc. These are your computing tools now. Real-World-Objects. Want to adjust your confusing video inputs and outputs? On the screen will be a photo-real television receiver, the big huge box with all the wires and connections, and really good labeling so you know where the wires go. Want to watch tv? Zoom in on a little television sitting on your desktop. Make it picture in picture by using some kind of parascope from another program..? Perhaps overlay a magnifying glass over another magnifying glass, or plop down some mirrors. The idea of this operating system is to be creative, and build real-world Do-It-Yourself (DIY) building skills. Want to automate a process, or as technical people call "scripting/programming"? You can do that EASILY, kids do it every day in woodshop and metal shop. On your screen will be a bin of tools, saws, boards, springs, gears, pulleys, etc. You can put together any kind of program using a simple "lego" method. The extent of the program depends on how smart the tools are, which in todays world actually have a ways to go. Kids don't write video card drivers, but in the future they will. As for file size of all these on-screen tools, they'll use some kind of vector/flash method, using math formulas rather than bulky photographs/movies. It'll all be converted into point-by-point numbers/colors/shades. Think clipart...but better. I'm not so great at explaining what a good vector art image looks like...kind of like a high quality cartoon.
You know what... I'll make a nice photo-realistic illustration (drawing) of this "cork board" operating system. Maybe I can somehow get funding for it before people start buying Windows7 (which actually isn't all that bad so far, but it still uses ancient information browsing methods).
Of course I would build this amazing OS on top of Ubuntu Linux, and if I could, I would further develop WINE to run ALL windows software.
* Unrelated: Lately I've been considering what an ideal home office would incorporate:
I want my future office to have one wall made of cork, one wall made of mirrors, and a 5ftx5ft wreath made of beautiful old jewelery. I'm not sure what to make the remaining two walls, floor, and ceiling of. I might make the ceiling an airbrushed cloud mural, but I also want it to be productive.
Thats all I really have for now... I'm collecting online photos of cork boards and art kits.
